S.O.S. Tips

Help Your Child(ren) Get Ready for School

Back to school can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time, both for parents and children. But with a little planning it can be a successful and memorable time for the whole family.

Here are a few of our favourite organizing tips to help your child succeed in school and life:
  1. Get your child involved in the process of organizing and cleaning his room. Be patient, it isn't going to be perfect and it doesn't need to be.
  2. Help your child throw out the garbage in his room. Donate useable items to a favourite charity. Toss the pizza boxes, torn or stained clothes, broken CD's and toys. These items are not fixable.
  3. Designate a study area in her room or in the corner of the living room or kitchen. Some kids like to be surrounded with family and noise, others prefer solitude and quiet.
  4. Regardless of the area you and your child choose make sure that your child has a proper desk, chair and good lighting.
  5. Enter all appointments, for the whole family, on a big erasable calendar mounted on the wall. Color code each family member's activities with their favourite colour.
  6. Beside the calendar have the phone numbers of your extended family, friends, school, doctor and, of course, your kid's friends.
  7. Ask your child to try on his or her clothes, remember kids grow over the summer. There is no point in keeping the clothes that don't fit.
  8. Use a cork board to pin those special events you are planning to attend. It is a great place for kids to pin their activities, sport events and birthday invitations. Remember, our kids and grandkids usually have a busier social calendar than we do!
  9. Beautiful sea grass baskets or plastic containers are the perfect place to store videos, books and items that have to be returned.
  10. Wooden pegs are a must for small hands and fingers. They are big and round and make it easy for kids to hang their backpacks, jackets etc.
  11. A functional, attractive bench is great to store shoes and sports equipment.
  12. On those West Coast rainy days a plastic tray is perfect to hold your child's muddy boots or sharp skates.
  13. For younger children, use open shelving and containers instead of toy boxes to store toys. They will have a better view and easy access to their belongings.
  14. Lower the rods or use a tension rod in your child's room to hang his clothes on his level. In order to easily teach your child to hang her clothes, buy her child size hangers.
  15. Make sure that your child has a laundry hamper and a garbage can in his room. Write down a laundry schedule and let your child know when garbage day is.

Once your child's room is organized it will take only 3-5 min each day to tidy up. Remember, if you want your child to be organized and tidy, you need to set an example and be organized yourself. Unfortunately kids do what we do, not what we say.
